    First TPV student graduates

Mr Ziusudras graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Design Photography major) at a University ceremony recently.

Curtin Pro Vice-Chancellor Academic Services Professor Jane den Hollander said Mr Ziusudras left Iraq and made his way to Australia where he arrived in 2000 at Ashmore Reef and was detained at the detention centre in Port Hedland.

“Mr Ziusudras was granted a Temporary Protection Visa in 2000 and his family joined him in 2002,” she said.

“He was one of the first people to be granted a scholarship under the University’s Temporary Protection Visa (TPV) Scholarship Program, introduced in 2003 as part of our commitment to social justice.

“In 2003 he commenced extension studies at the University towards a Bachelor of Arts degree and I congratulate him on his recent graduation – it is a wonderful achievement for him and his family.”

Mr Ziusudras - now a permanent resident - is currently studying a Graduate Diploma in Film and Television and plans to undertake his Master of Film and Television next semester.

“Since studying at the University I have won several photography awards that would not have happened without Curtin’s support. Curtin’s TPV Scholarship Program has helped me to achieve my academic goals and I am very appreciative of the constant encouragements and support I received,” Mr Ziusudras said.

“With guidance from my course supervisor, Howard Worth, I was awarded a grant by the Film and Television Institute and City of Vincent to produce a film about another refugee with similar circumstances to me,” he said

Under the Program, TPV holders can access study at the University once they have applied for refugee status in Australia, if they are not already holding a valid visa and if they have been deemed to have a genuine case.

Consideration is also given to people who may not hold a TPV but who have had a similar refugee experience and decisions are made on a case-by-case basis.

The Scholarship covers the cost of tuition fees, is dependent upon the student maintaining satisfactory academic progress and is only for the TPV’s duration.

Professor den Hollander said that many TPV holders have had their education disrupted and are disadvantaged as a result of their indeterminate visa status in Australia.

“They may not have access to the services available to migrants - including access to higher education,” Professor den Hollander said.

“This is one of the key reasons the University introduced the Program that was developed in partnership with the Association for Services to Torture and Trauma Survivors.”
